VISIT THE MERE VISITOR CENTRE TO SEE LIVE IMAGES OF THE HERONS NESTING ON MOSCOW ISLAND DURING THE SPRING MONTHS

The Mere’s Moscow Island, in Ellesmere, is one of the easiest places to view Grey Herons in the UK. Pop into the Boathouse Café Visitor Centre to see herons gathering and delivering nesting material in February and watch the herons lay their first eggs in May through the live feed cameras.
With their long legs, long beaks and grey, black and white feathering Grey Herons are unmistakable. The heronry at Ellesmere has been active for about 40 years each year they return to the heronry and take up their nest sites, high up in the trees. The high tech cameras allow you to see right into their world.
Moscow Island was constructed in 1812 from the soil excavated to create the gardens at Ellesmere house, the island gained its name through the defeat of Napoleon in Moscow in the same year. The island provides the perfect sanctuary for the birds as it no longer readily accessible to people.
